Commissioning and synchronization of unit 5 Ust-Khantayskaya HPP

On August 23 Ust-Khantayskaya HPP (UHHPP) Hydropower unit №5 was commissioned and synchronized.

Ust-Khantayskaya HPP is the first hydropower plant in the North of Artic Circle. Main generator hall of the plant sits 47 meters below surface in an enclosed stone pit on the right coast of the river Hantayka. UHHPP provides electricity to the whole Norilsk manufacturing district and all its numerous factories. It is worth noting that Taimyr power-transmission system is completely isolated from the RF one. With more than 280 days with temperatures below 0 ºC, 130 days of blizzards and 45 days of polar night a flawless operation of power-generation system is vital and modernized Ust-Khantayskaya HPP is a key element.

Five out of seven power units that remained operational for more than 40 years were replaced and according to the experts this actions made UHHPP one of the largest projects on the Russian generating market. A comprehensive modernization of UHHPP is a part of the general investment strategy of Norilsk Nickel on the power generation market.
